How to Compress Photo & Signature for Online Exam Forms

Applying for SSC, UPSC, IBPS or a state exam? The photo and signature upload is where most applicants get stuck. Here's exactly how to prepare them so the portal accepts them the first time.

What the exam portals usually ask for

SSC and IBPS typically want the smallest sizes (photo 20–50 KB, signature 10–20 KB). UPSC allows a wider range. Always check your notification.

Step 1 — Prepare the photograph

Stand against a plain, light-coloured wall in good daylight.
Keep your face centred and clearly visible, shoulders in frame.
If the form asks for your name and the date printed on the photo, add that before uploading.

Step 2 — Prepare the signature

Sign inside a box on plain white paper using a black or blue pen.
Photograph or scan it in good light.
Crop tightly around the signature so there's little white space — this makes the small KB target easy to hit while staying legible.

Step 3 — Resize and compress

Open the image compressor.
For the photo, limit the largest side to about 200 px, then compress toward 20–50 KB.
For the signature, limit the largest side to about 140 px, then compress toward 10–20 KB.
Download each JPEG and upload to the portal.

Why the portal keeps rejecting my upload

Wrong format — most exam forms accept only JPEG/JPG, not PNG or PDF.
Too large or too small — both an over-limit and an under-minimum file get rejected; aim for the middle of the range.
Wrong dimensions — some portals check pixel dimensions as well as KB. Resize to the specified pixels.
Signature too faint — sign darker and crop tighter rather than compressing an oversized image.
